From ICK to SLICK

I wanted to share a few pictures of the master bathroom re-model we had done at our old home.  Let me set the scene.  The house we used to live in was a 1970's ranch style home.  You all know the type.  Great bones, rooms, size, and yard.  However, chances are if you get a steal of a deal on one, you need to do some work.  Well, need is a relative term.  Our master bath was fine.  Totally efficient and working.  But as you can see below, the decor left much to be desired.  There was an eclectic mix of 70's brass fixtures, cultured cream marble, some white subway and square tile with icky grout, a "re-done" floor with blue and brown slate tiles, Tuscan Love mirrors and vanity lights, and bronze accessories.  Yummy.

So, yes, it all the sudden became a need that we update things a bit, and enlisted the expertise of Richland.   Richland specializes in the design and construction of homes around Dallas, but for a mere $100 they will come to your house, walk through your ideas, give you estimations on cost, square footage, and value added, give you advice on fixtures, appliances, colors, and the best part - will tell you what to look out for when you hire a contractor to do the work.  I may know about decor, but knew squat about the ins and outs (and possible issues) of gutting a bathroom.  Very Helpful.

I used Restoration Hardware as my inspiration for this re-model and all I knew is I wanted white subway tile, espresso cabinets, carerra marble countertops, and (ahhhhh) a jetted tub. Kind of miss this bathroom!!

THE BEFORE.............

here she is....drool
Oh, and I forgot to add the mirrored backplash.....it went up to the ceiling!  Good for checking yourself out in your undies, but little else ;)  notice the blue and brown slate.....i mean, it could be interesting in another space, but not this one.

There's that backplash.  The tub actually was in good shape, but taking a bath was a frigid experience.  For some reason, the (still) water would get cold halfway through the bath.

The brass framed shower.....and not the cool brass.  You can't tell from the picture, but the white tile in the shower was a mix of subway and square, and the grout was....eww.

AND AFTER..........

AHHHH.....Espresso brown vanity cabinets, chrome fixtures, & carerra marble counter top.
New jetted tub, and new white subway tile backsplash that went around the entire bathroom.  Another idea from Restoration Hardware, and one of my favorite things about the space.  Used the color Silver Sage from Restoration hardware.  Love this color!
My side of the bathroom
Loved the look of the subway tile backsplash behind the vanities

So, originally I had it in my head to have white hexagon tile all over the floor and white subway tile everywhere else.  Richland talked me out of it, and thank goodness!  Hexagon tile always seems like a great floor option until you consider all the grout that would need constant cleaning.  Instead, they suggested we go with this more contemporary rectangular ceramic which added a little mod to the look.  The coolest thing was when they cut the tile to frame the tub, there was a natural clay looking border.  It was unexpected and cool.

Brass be gone.....new shower with tile to ceiling and rain shower head.

Scallops & Scales

Have a few design projects in progress and am wanting to incorporate what is becoming my new favorite pattern.  A little softer than the linear geometric patterns out there, I think these scallops are the perfect way to marry traditional and modern pieces.  I have a set of chairs that might be draped in the swatch below!

These three are from Spoonflower.  They have AMAZING custom printed fabric at the most reasonable prices!

Just Beachy

Hubs went on a man-cation last weekend to Santa Rosa to play golf with his old friends from McCallie and brought me home the most beautiful book. Anyone who travels to the Florida Panhandle for vacation is familiar with 30A. Its the long stretch of highway that reaches Destin, Santa Rosa, Seaside, Rosemary Beach, etc. Here are a few pics from this gorgeous book showing the interiors of some of the beach houses along the stretch.

Can't get enough of.....

Turqouise....not the light bright sea turquoise, but the deep, dramatic jewel toned turquoise that is popping up in dining rooms, offices, bathrooms...you name it.  I might have to paint something in this color..... :)

Shine a Light on Me

Thought I'd share pics of the installed and lit Sputnik! The shadows on the walls were unexpected, and at first I wasn't sure about them, but now I like.  Annabel says "oooooo" when I turn it on.....good enough reason for me to love it!  TGIF

Sputnik Bliss

I've got glue on my fingers and gold paint on my clothes, but friends we are at the very last inch before the finish line! Only thing left to do is have it installed. Here she goes:

IKEA PS MASKROS Pendant lamp Diameter: 32 " Cord length: 71 " Diameter: 80 cm Cord length: 180 cm
WHAT WAS ONCE THIS.......

IS NOW THIS :)
STEP 1 & 2 - trimmed down florets to 2.5 inches around. Cut straws top to bottom and slipped them around the stems of the chandelier.....the stems were very thin and the straws help to make the chandelier more substantial.
Used Rustoleum Metallic spray in brass finish to paint all florets and stems.
All the pieces just before painting
Used clear Fabric-Tac glue to attach the amuse bouche plates
After snapping the florets to each "wand", they very easily snap into the base unit. The light bulb goes right in the middle. Once installed, I'll post a picture of it lit:)

Sputnik Progress (or not)

I'm not gonna lie, this is the most labor intensive project I've had in a while....80 straws to be cut, 80 florets to be trimmed, and straw assembly took me to Friday. With two little ones that wanted to chew and play swords with the straws, I'm lucky I got to that point:).  Prep work is done, and now it is time to paint and assemble. Mission continues!

Why Hello Ms. Dorothy

If you have an unhealthy obsession with vintage furniture, the name Dorothy Draper might make your ears perk up just a bit. If you have been on a lifelong hunt for her Espana dresser, you know that if you come across one under (and I mean WAY under) the $4900 they are fetching on EBay, you take it and run....even if it isn't authentic.  Well, thanks to Kristen, one man's trash is this woman's treasure. Now, the previous owner couldn't have known what she had on hand as (horror) the dresser was spray painted (!) a grayish white and the solid brass ring pulls were sprayed black! Don't have it in the budget to paint this lovely piece just yet(although working on inspiration....see below), but the handles were brass again with a little paint thinner and a straight razor. Thanks Kristen for this amazing find!
